Edmonds Strategic Group (EdG) congratulates our client, Skydweller Aero, on a record–breaking milestone during the U.S. Navy’s Fleet Exercise (FLEX) 26.
Skydweller’s Autonomous Maritime Patrol Aircraft (AMPA) conducted an 8–day, 14–minute autonomous flight, demonstrating that extreme–endurance, solar–powered ISR is operationally achievable today.
Mission Highlights
- Real–World Persistence: Launched from Mississippi on April 26, the aircraft provided continuous multi–INT payload capabilities — including AN/ZPY–8 SAR tracking and FLIR 380X HDc electro–optical/infrared imaging — directly to U.S. government networks.
- Airspace Flexibility: The platform extended operations into the SOUTHCOM area of responsibility, coordinating with international ATC centers to navigate complex airspace and avoid a major cold front south of Cuba.
- The Record: The aircraft exceeded seven continuous days airborne, demonstrating operationally relevant persistence beyond the endurance limits of conventional crewed ISR platforms. Following the successful completion of all exercise objectives, the flight was concluded with a controlled water ditching in the Gulf.
Closing the Coverage Gap
Vast maritime environments demand a persistence that traditional assets cannot provide — satellites lack continuous dwell, crewed aircraft face endurance limitations, and surface vessels cannot rapidly cover large operating areas. Skydweller’s FLEX 26 performance demonstrated the viability of fuel–independent, multi–day autonomous ISR operations at an operationally relevant scale.
Next Steps: Expanding Operational Theater Access
With the foundational capability validated, the focus shifts from experimental flight testing to theater deployment. The lessons learned from this historic flight are being integrated into the platform’s next production configuration, optimized to provide persistent coverage in highly contested environments.
Edmonds Strategic Group is actively partnering with Skydweller to transition this unique solar–powered capability directly into critical operational theaters. EdG is spearheading strategic initiatives to align Skydweller’s long–endurance ISR suite with urgent operational requirements across USCENTCOM, USINDOPACOM, and the DoW Strategic Capabilities Office (SCO).
By bridging the gap between frontier aerospace innovation and frontline combatant command requirements, EdG and Skydweller are shaping the future of persistent global surveillance.
“Onward and upward.”
